Pilla Medal with Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle
The use of coins as personal adornments began in ancient Rome, when the imperial coinage was mounted in jewels to convey class and wealth. The collection “Pilla”, which means wealth in the Sardinian language treats antique coins in the same way as precious stones; chosen for the beauty of their depictions and preciousness, they are framed in 18k gold and encapsulated in plexiglass for a contemporary and tactile result. This medal is designed as a celebration and a testament to history, featuring one of its authentic fragment: an antique twenty-dollar “Double Eagle” gold coin produced from 1907 to 1933. Considered by many to be the most beautiful of U.S. coin ever minted, it is named after its designer, the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who did not survive to see it released. The obverse shows a female figure of Liberty, who also represents Victory, as the sculptor's ultimate inspiration was the Nike of Samothrace.
