Pilla Medal with Indian Head eagle
The use of coins as personal adornments began in ancient Rome, when the imperial coinage was mounted in jewels to convey class and wealth. The collection “Pilla”, which means wealth in the Sardinian language treats antique coins in the same way as precious stones; chosen for the beauty of their depictions and preciousness, they are framed in 18k gold and encapsulated in plexiglass for a contemporary and tactile result. This medal is designed as a celebration and a testament to history, featuring one of its authentic fragment: an antique “Indian Head” Eagle, a ten-dollar gold coin struck by the United States Mint from 1907 until 1933. Commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt to the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the obverse features a left-facing bust of Liberty wearing a Native American war bonnet, as per the President’s wish: “I feel very strongly that on at least one coin we ought to have the Indian feather headdress. It is distinctly American, and very picturesque.”
